THE PRESENT (95 mins)
Danny is an eighteen year old who is returning to the Australia of his childhood. Under the influence of marijuana and the questionings of a sinister, fluent con-man called Michael, he is falsely persuaded that he has raped and possibly killed his mother's friend, whom he was staying with. Michael establishes Danny with a new identity, as a young art student and he introduces Danny to two women, the prickly feminist Becky and the sculptress Libby, to whom, we learn in one of the play's dreamlike connections, Danny surrendered his virginity in the UK during the hot summer of 1976... There are some extraordinary sexual encounters, at once funny and threatening. 'The Present remains mysterious to the end. But there is no mistaking its atmospheric power, its sinister sexuality and its bracingly black comedy'. Cast KATRIN CARTLIDGE
